Equipment and supplies!

Postby root » Tue Nov 08, 2016 11:34 pm

Here I'm going to post recommended tools and supplies for soldering. Some will be starter equipment, some will be the kind of thing you'll keep using for almost every project you work on, even as your skills improve.

Flux: MG Chemicals 835-P Rosin Flux Pen. This is one you'll use constantly, and probably will just re-buy the same one once it's empty. It's not the cheapest option, but it's inexpensive and damn good.

Solder: MG Chemicals (see a trend? They make good stuff) 60/40 tin/lead solder. SpyAlelo may recommend the 63/37, but I personally find this a little easier to work with. This is the one I use myself.

Iron tip cleaner: This is a little fuzzier, since it's kind of all the same. I like the Hakko holder since it fits with my equipment (I use older Hakko irons), but the Aoyue is not bad either. This cleans the tip well without thermally shocking it and causing oxidization like a wet sponge would.

Other equipment:
The highest concentration Isopropyl Alcohol you can get. 92-97% is sufficient and easily attainable at any drugstore.
Toothbrush. Cheap as heck, with as flat bristles as you can get. We're talking dollar store toothbrushes. You'll use these with the alcohol for cleaning off the flux you just used.

That's mostly it for supplies. Next, we'll get into equipment.
